About Cardigan Bowling Club

According to a records from 1713, the first bowling green in Cardigan is said to have been in the castle. In 1925, a bowling green was opened elsewhere in the town; later to become a car park. Cardigan Bowling Club was established at its current location in 1965.

Since its formation, the club has grown from strength to strength. If you would like more details of the club's development, read our History of Cardigan Bowling Club

Welsh International and Cardigan Bowling Club member Kevin JamesClwb Bowlio Aberteifi - Cardigan Bowling Club offers a warm welcome to visitors, guests and prospective new social and bowling members alike. Currently, the club has an active membership spanning all ages from teens to octogenareans. Several of our members, both men and women, have represented Wales in international competitions, both as juniors and seniors, and the county team and the over 60s county team regularly include players from our club.

There are plenty of opportunities for keen bowlers to test their skills. The club has two league teams, Cardigan and Aberteifi, both of which have enjoyed great success in the Ceredigion County Bowling Association league, as well as a ladies team that has twice won both the Llan League and the WWLBA Championships. The green is open from late spring until early autumn and there are competitions running throughout the season. The indoor bowling centre is used all year round for roll-ups, internal club leagues and competitions.

Facilities

Whether you are an active bowler or not, do drop in and see us. We have an excellent clubhouse with a well stocked bar and lounge (available for hire for functions) where you can relax and watch the bowls, view sporting events on our television or projector, or simply chill out in good company. There is seating around the green and in the viewing area of the indoor bowls centre.

The outdoor green has six rinks with play in one direction during the day and then played at 90o in the evening, for league matches and for major competitions. Changing facilities include male and female dressing rooms in the clubhouse and additional changing spaces for visitors provided in our external pavilion and in the indoor bowling centre.

The indoor bowling centre boasts two full size rinks and plenty of space for relaxing and spectating. Lockers are available for hire and are used by both indoor and outdoor players. The centre is regularly used on Saturdays throughout the winter as a venue for Cardiganshire Short Mat Bowling Association county competitions.

Accessing Cardigan Bowling Club

Cardigan Bowling Club can be accessed by public transport, with stops for buses travelling between Cardigan and Aberystwyth less than 100m from the club.

For those who travel by car, the road on which Cardigan Bowling Club is situated has ample unrestricted parking. The pavements are level and there are dropped kurbs at strategic crossing places, including immediately outside the club gates.

Walkways around the club grounds are level and there is sufficient space for wheelchairs to manoeuvre. The club does not have exterior floodlighting, but the area between the entrance gate and the access doors leading to the bar and the indoor bowls centre benefits from shared lighting provided by nearby street lights and both of these access doorways have external lights that are switched on when the buildings are in use after dusk.

The entrance to the bar in up a short shallow slope and the doorway and corridor widths accept wheelchairs. Within the bar area, there is ample room to manoeuvre a wheelchair. The emergency exits include the main entrance (described above) and sliding patio doors which have a threshold drop of 150 mm (6 ins) leading onto the walkway around the outdoor green. The clubhouse does not have disabled-access toilets.

The indoor bowling centre has a shallow slope leading to the entrance doorway which is wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. The playing area can be accessed from the viewing gallery - there is a drop of 50 mm (2 ins) from the gallery to the playing surface. The emergency exits are the main entrance (described above) and an additional exit half-way along rink 2. This exit has a threshold drop of 100 mm (4 ins) and a further step down of 150 mm (6 ins). The indoor bowling centre has a toilet that provides disabled access.

The outdoor green has shallow steps at each corner and there is a removable ramp available to provide wheelchair access to the green at the corner nearest to the entrance to the grounds.
